The examples of stonework in Istanbul are found mostly on the walls of the buildings, mosques, minarets and minbars (pulpits), gates, columns, fountains, pools and tombstones. Stonework not only adds aesthetics but also contributes to the strength and overall composition of the structures. Though almost all kinds of stones are used, marble and sandstone are the most common preferences.
