The art of miniatures does not have light and dark effects and depth and thus developed different than western art of painting. The art of miniatures is usually found in manuscripts of history and literature. Istanbul has always been the most important center for this art supported by the palace. Miniatures continued their progress until the westernizing period, which started in the 18th century, and declined in importance as the classical western painting spread. Today the miniatures are considered to have a documentary significance beside their artistic values and select examples are displayed at museums.
